A customer asked us last week to recommend a book she could not write in, because writing in books felt like damage. We recommended the book, then spent the rest of the shift arguing about the premise. Here is where we landed: a clean book is a book you borrowed. A book you own should show evidence. The three picks this month all arrived in our hands secondhand, annotated by strangers, and were better for it. |
